Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Senior Engineering Manager will lead engineering operations across Fixed Plant, Mobile Plant, and Infrastructure. This pivotal role is responsible for setting engineering strategies, standards, and maintenance programs that ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective asset performance aligned with the production plan. You will oversee the Engineering Managers for Fixed Plant and Mobile Plant, fostering unified systems and standards while supporting the Operations Manager and site leadership team on all engineering matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote and enforce compliance with safety, health, and environmental policies, embedding Barrick’s values across all engineering functions and contractors.
  • Maintain legal engineering accountabilities under Zambian mining legislation and ensure all necessary appointments and compliance are met.
  • Develop and implement emission reduction initiatives across Process Plant, Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME), and Light Mobile Equipment (LME).
  • Lead, coach, and hold accountable the Engineering Managers for Fixed Plant and Mobile Maintenance, setting clear performance expectations.
  • Establish a unified engineering strategy and operating rhythm consistent with AME regional maintenance and system standards.
  • Support production planning, risk management, and investment decisions as part of the site leadership team.
  • Manage the Stay in Business Capital process to maximize investment value.
  • Deliver engineering and maintenance excellence within the approved annual budget.
  • Enhance reliability of critical equipment to minimize production stoppages and meet throughput targets.
  • Drive the transition from reactive to proactive and predictive maintenance using work management, defect elimination, and condition monitoring.
  • Implement disciplined SAP-driven planning, scheduling, and reliability processes for routine work and shutdowns.
  • Use life cycle costing to inform decisions on asset replacement and refurbishment.
  • Plan and execute sustaining capital programs supporting the Life of Mine plan and Super Pit Expansion.
  • Lead engineering readiness and safe handover of new plant and fleet from projects into operations.
  • Provide engineering input to feasibility studies, business cases, and capital requests.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to optimize stock levels and critical spares through integrated demand planning.
  • Manage OEM and contractor performance to ensure quality service delivery while pursuing cost efficiency.
  • Build a resilient engineering and maintenance organization to support site expansion within approved headcount.
  • Prioritize development of Zambian personnel via on-the-job training, mentoring, apprenticeships, and graduate pathways.
  • Develop succession plans for senior engineering, technical, and supervisory roles with a focus on national talent progression.
  • Promote gender diversity within the engineering function where possible.
  • Leverage data analytics, condition monitoring, and automation aligned with the AME technology framework.
  • Drive continuous improvement and cost optimization across the engineering function.

Candidate Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering; postgraduate qualifications in Business, Engineering Management, or Project Management are advantageous.
  • Minimum 15 years of mining maintenance and engineering experience, including at least 8 years in senior engineering or maintenance leadership roles.
  • Proven leadership experience managing maintenance for large-scale process plants (concentrators) and heavy mobile equipment fleets.
  • Strong knowledge of asset management and reliability methodologies such as RCM, FMEA, criticality analysis, and condition monitoring.
  • Proficiency in SAP PM work management, planning, and scheduling.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Ability to perform detailed analysis and prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Registration with the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) and Energy Regulation Board (ERB), or eligibility to register, is essential.
