HSSE Specialist Opportunity in Kitwe, Copperbelt, Zambia

About the HSSE Specialist Role

Reporting directly to the Country HSSEQ Manager, the HSSE Specialist will play a critical role in supporting Puma Energy’s Retail, Aviation, Transport, Terminal, Engineering, and Project Operations. The successful candidate will provide technical and operational support for HSSEQ management systems, assurance programs, audits, inspections, risk assessments, incident investigations, and process safety initiatives, among other responsibilities. This position is key to safeguarding people, assets, reputation, and the environment while driving compliance and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities for HSSE Specialist Jobs in Kitwe

  • Implement, maintain, and continuously improve HSSEQ Management Systems.
  • Conduct SAPS audits, security assessments, internal management system audits, and compliance reviews.
  • Manage ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 audit programs and management reviews.
  • Perform Root Risk Assessments (RRAs), maintain risk registers, and develop Risk Reduction Action Plans (RRAPs).
  • Lead assurance programs, critical control verifications, and operational compliance reviews.
  • Oversee Process Safety Management (PSM) across terminals and operational facilities.
  • Administer the SpheraCloud Management System, including action tracking and performance reporting.
  • Manage incident reporting, investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and lessons learned.
  • Ensure contractor HSSEQ compliance through performance reviews, audits, and onboarding.
  • Support HSSEQ activities for capital projects, engineering works, retail developments, and maintenance operations.
  • Coordinate project assurance activities such as HAZID, HAZOP, Management of Change (MoC), and Pre-Start-Up Safety Reviews (PSSR).
  • Conduct site inspections, compliance assessments, operational readiness reviews, and assurance activities.
  • Prepare HSSEQ performance reports, monitor KPIs, and analyze trends through dashboards.
  • Develop and deliver training, awareness programs, audit readiness initiatives, and competency development.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Risk Management, or a related discipline.
  • Professional HSE qualification or equivalent certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in HSSEQ, risk management, compliance, auditing, or quality management within high-risk operational environments.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 Management Systems.
  • Proven experience in auditing, risk assessment, incident investigation, contractor management, and compliance monitoring.
  • Familiarity with Process Safety Management principles and practices.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, stakeholder engagement, presentation, and report-writing skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with cloud-based EMS or HSSEQ management platforms is advantageous.
  • Membership in the Zambia Occupational Health and Safety Association is required.
