Barrick Lumwana Mining Corporation is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional for the role of Superintendent – Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) at our Kalumbila site in North West Province, Zambia. About the Superintendent Tailings Storage Facility Role
Reporting directly to the Tailings Storage Facility Manager, the Superintendent will oversee day-to-day management and supervision of all TSF operational teams at the Lumwana Copper Mine. This position also serves as the Deputy Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer (Deputy RTFE) under Barrick’s Tailings Management Standard (BCG-MI-ST-01), ensuring compliance and operational excellence.
The Superintendent will lead four key operational functions: the Operations Team, Piping & Pumping Team, Laboratory Team, and coordinate the Engineer of Record’s quality assurance and design activities onsite.
Key Responsibilities for Superintendent Tailings Storage Facility Jobs Kalumbila
- Act as Deputy RTFE, assuming full accountability in the absence of the Tailings Manager, including all reporting and decision-making duties.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of TSF design, construction history, current performance, and future objectives aligned with Barrick standards.
- Participate in Potential Failure Mode Analysis (PFMA), formal risk assessments, and updates to the Critical Controls Management Plan (CCMP).
- Support the maintenance of the Operations Management System (OMS) Manual and lead operational training on OMS and Trigger Action Response Plans (TARP).
- Conduct daily Routine Inspections (RIs) of the TSF, completing and submitting inspection reports promptly.
- Assist in coordinating Dam Safety Inspections (DSIs) and Dam Safety Reviews (DSRs), working closely with the Engineer of Record and review panels.
- Monitor Quantitative Performance Objectives (QPOs) continuously and initiate appropriate TARP responses, escalating as necessary.
- Collect, analyze, and report geotechnical, hydrological, and environmental instrumentation data contributing to quarterly monitoring reports.
- Support emergency preparedness, ensuring all teams are trained and competent in emergency response procedures.
- Maintain accurate site records and documentation in compliance with corporate standards.
Qualifications and Experience Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in tailings or geotechnical operations, including at least 3 years in a senior supervisory or superintendent role managing multiple teams on an active TSF.
- Proven hands-on experience managing TSF deposition operations, pipeline and pumping systems, and tailings laboratory activities.
- Experience collaborating with external Engineers of Record or design consultants in construction or operational settings.
- Familiarity with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM 2020) and RTFE/Deputy RTFE responsibilities as per BCG-MI-ST-01 or equivalent.
- Professional Engineer registration with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) is mandatory.
- Demonstrated leadership managing large, multicultural operational teams in 24/7 remote environments.
- Experience working in sub-Saharan Africa or comparable environments is advantageous.
