We are currently recruiting a Substation Primary Plant Engineer to join our Transmission and Distribution Energy Unit in Lusaka, Zambia.

The Substation Primary Plant Engineer role involves designing and implementing primary plant systems for substations operating from 11 kV up to 500 kV. Candidates with experience in secondary plant design are also encouraged to apply. The position level will be determined by the candidate’s experience, ranging from junior to senior.

Key Responsibilities for Substation Primary Plant Engineer Jobs in Lusaka

  • Contribute to the design of transmission and distribution switching stations and substations (11 kV to 500 kV).
  • Develop substation primary plant designs including single line diagrams (SLD), general arrangement (GA), sections, earthing grids, lighting, lightning protection, CCTV, trenching, and conduit layouts.
  • Perform earthing designs using CDEGS, including soil model development and detailed analysis.
  • Conduct lighting designs using Relux or Dialux, incorporating 3D CAD models.
  • Design lightning protection systems in CDEGS based on international standards and electro geometric modelling.
  • Carry out electromagnetic field (EMF) calculations and modelling using CDEGS.
  • Perform corona, noise, and radio frequency interference (RFI) calculations following EPRI methods.
  • Calculate short circuit forces using standards and MATHCAD software.
  • Design underground cables up to 500 kV with cyclic loading analysis in CDEGS and CYMCAP.
  • Compile bills of materials (BOMs), technical reports, and engineering calculations.
  • Interpret and apply relevant standards, implementing calculation formulas in Excel.
  • Prepare technical specifications and schedules for primary plant equipment.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of substation equipment, structures, hardware, clamps, busbars, cables, and conductors for voltages up to 500 kV.
  • Apply basic CCTV and security system design knowledge.
  • Leverage basic renewable energy and secondary plant design experience.
  • Overhead line design experience using PLS-CADD is advantageous.
  • Utilize project management skills, including scheduling with MS Projects.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (B.Eng, B.Sc, or B.Tech) accredited by EIZ or ERB (Zambia) or equivalent South African qualification.
  • At least three years of relevant experience in transmission and distribution projects.
  • Professional engineering registration or actively pursuing registration.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Word, MS Projects, CDEGS, CYMCAP, MATHCAD, and Relux or Dialux.
  • Basic skills in Microstation or AutoCAD.
