This role is vital to securing a sustainable supply of high-quality sorghum to support our brewing operations. We are looking for a passionate professional to manage farmer relationships, implement sustainable sourcing strategies, and oversee sorghum production programs that contribute to our vision of growing responsibly and innovatively.
About the Role – Sorghum Agronomist Jobs in Lusaka
As a Sorghum Agronomist, you will play a pivotal role in developing and managing sorghum supply chains by engaging with farmers, cooperatives, and local stakeholders. Your responsibilities will include coordinating research trials, supporting regenerative agriculture practices, and ensuring the aggregation and delivery of sorghum grain meets strict quality standards. This full-time position offers an opportunity to contribute to AB InBev’s sustainability goals while advancing your career in agricultural science and crop management.
Key Responsibilities
- Farmer Contracting and Engagement: Register and contract sorghum farmers, build and maintain a sustainable network, and serve as the main liaison for farmer groups and cooperatives.
- Sustainability Strategy Implementation: Deliver training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), facilitate farmer access to market and climate information, promote financial empowerment, and support climate-smart agricultural techniques.
- Input and Crop Management: Recommend sorghum varieties, coordinate procurement and distribution of inputs, monitor crop development, and provide expert agronomic advice throughout the growing season.
- Research and Trials: Collaborate with research teams to design and execute sorghum trials, analyze data, and recommend improvements to production protocols.
- Project Planning and Execution: Develop and implement seasonal production plans, manage resources, and ensure project objectives are met with safety and quality standards.
- Harvesting and Supply Chain Coordination: Oversee harvesting, grain aggregation, quality compliance, and logistics to minimize losses and ensure fair farmer compensation.
- Cooperative Development: Strengthen governance and operational capacity of farmer cooperatives through mentoring and technical support.
- Monitoring and Reporting: Maintain accurate production and trial data, prepare regular reports, and assist with budget tracking.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with government, research institutions, and agricultural organizations to support sorghum development and compliance.
- Equipment and Safety Management: Ensure proper maintenance and safe use of farm and research equipment, and promote a culture of safety and quality.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Plant Science, Crop Science, Agriculture, or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in agricultural production, extension services, crop management, or agronomy.
- Proven experience with sorghum production systems is highly desirable.
- Experience managing field trials and farmer development programs.
- Strong background working with smallholder farmers and cooperatives.
- Valid driver’s license with at least 5 years of driving experience; motorbike riding skills are an advantage.
- Willingness to travel extensively across sorghum-growing regions.
