Purpose and Objective
The Recoveries and Compliance Lead is responsible for leading Valuefin Limited’s recoveries function and ensuring that lending operations comply with internal policies, statutory requirements and approved controls. The role safeguards portfolio quality by directing recovery activity, supervising the Recoveries Officer and the wider recoveries team, monitoring arrears and portfolio at risk, and ensuring that client onboarding, loan origination, disbursement, documentation and collateral processes meet required standards.
Key Responsibilities
Recoveries Leadership and Team Supervision
- Oversee the entire recoveries function and take accountability for the quality, consistency and effectiveness of recovery activity across Valuefin.
- Supervise the recoveries team, allocate portfolios and cases, set daily and weekly priorities, and monitor individual and team performance.
- Provide virtual and physical recovery support to field recoveries staff, including guidance on difficult negotiations, field visits, collateral action and escalation decisions.
Repayment Monitoring and Early Intervention
- Review client repayment patterns using daily reports generated by loan agents and other approved portfolio monitoring tools.
- Flag clients with skipped, late or irregular repayments and ensure prompt follow-up before arrears worsen.
- Generate loan-agent deposit confirmation reports and investigate unreconciled, delayed or unusual deposits.
- Ensure defaulting clients are contacted through telephone calls, messages and physical visits in line with the company’s recovery procedures.
Arrears Management and Recovery Action
- Develop and oversee account-specific recovery strategies, repayment arrangements and escalation plans for delinquent accounts.
- Manage high-ticket, sensitive, complex or materially impaired recovery cases.
- Review the progress and quality of client follow-ups, field visits, notices and repayment commitments completed by the recoveries team.
- Coordinate with external debt collectors, bailiffs, legal advisers and other approved service providers, and monitor their mandates, conduct, progress and results.
- Recommend appropriate pre-legal or legal action, support lawful collateral recovery and disposal, and ensure that client engagements, promises to pay, costs and outcomes are fully recorded.
Credit Process and Client Compliance
- Verify compliance at client onboarding and loan origination stages, including customer identification, required approvals, affordability or capacity assessments, supporting documentation and data completeness.
- Conduct routine compliance checks of physical client files and system client profiles, document exceptions and ensure timely corrective action.
- Ensure collateral for high-ticket facilities is properly documented, verified, valued where required, perfected or registered where applicable, securely held and traceable.
- Identify recurring control weaknesses and recommend changes to lending, documentation, recovery and monitoring procedures.
Reporting and Management Information
- Generate and share daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly arrears reports within agreed timelines.
- Monitor and distribute portfolio-at-risk reports, highlighting movement, ageing, concentration, recovery rates and material exceptions.
- Provide management with clear analysis of delinquency drivers, team productivity, high-ticket exposures, expected recoveries, escalated cases and compliance gaps.
- Ensure the integrity and consistency of recovery and compliance data, and reconcile discrepancies with loan agents, finance, credit and branch teams.
Cross-Functional Coordination and Additional Duties
- Work closely with loan agents, branch teams, credit, finance and management to prevent avoidable arrears and ensure smooth handover of delinquent accounts.
- Promote fair client treatment, confidentiality, responsible lending and respectful recovery practices across the team.
- Support staff training on recovery procedures, documentation standards, compliance controls and lessons from portfolio performance.
- Perform other related duties assigned by management that are consistent with the purpose of the role.
4. Deliverables and Performance Targets
Deliverable
- Portfolio quality Maintain arrears and portfolio at risk within management-approved thresholds, with clear action plans for exceptions.
- Early intervention Daily repayment exceptions are identified, assigned and followed up within stipulated timelines.
- Recovery performance Team recovery targets are achieved and high-ticket or complex cases have documented strategies and timely escalation.
- Reporting Daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly arrears and PAR reports are accurate, complete and submitted on time.
- File and system compliance Routine reviews are completed as scheduled, exceptions are logged, and corrective actions are closed within agreed timelines.
- Disbursement control No loan is authorised or recommended for disbursement without a complete system request and required approvals.
- Security Perfection/Collateral compliance High-ticket facilities have complete, valid and traceable collateral documentation before disbursement and throughout the loan term.
- Team leadership Recoveries staff receive clear work allocations, regular coaching and documented performance reviews.
5. Working Relationships
- Reports directly to the Managing Partner.
- Directly supervises the recoveries team.
- Works closely with loan agents, branch teams, credit, finance and management on portfolio quality, disbursement controls and account escalation.
- Liaises with clients, guarantors, collateral holders, external debt collectors, bailiffs, legal advisers and other approved service providers.
Person Specification
- Diploma or degree in Banking, Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Law, Risk and Compliance or a related field.
- At least two years’ relevant experience in credit, recoveries, microfinance, lending operations, risk or compliance, including experience supervising staff or coordinating a team.
- Strong understanding of arrears management, portfolio-at-risk analysis, loan documentation, collateral controls and field-based recoveries.
- Working knowledge of statutory business compliance and the ability to coordinate effectively with regulators, authorities and professional service providers.
- Strong leadership, negotiation, judgement, analytical, reporting and stakeholder-management skills.
- High integrity, discretion and respect for confidentiality, client dignity and ethical recovery practice.
- Ability and willingness to travel to branches, client premises and field locations as required.
