Transparency & Accountability Lab (TAL)

Location: Choma District, Southern Province, Zambia (with community and national-level travel)

Duration: 6 months, subject to renewal based on performance

Reporting to: Team Lead / Programmes Lead

Note: Only applicants based in Choma District should apply.

About Us:

Transparency & Accountability Lab (TAL) is a Zambian non-profit organization working to strengthen citizen participation, transparency, and accountability in local governance. Since its founding in Choma District in 2019, TAL has built a strong grassroots presence, engaging citizens — particularly youth and women — in governance processes through civic education, community-led monitoring, and youth leadership programmes. Guided by our 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, TAL is expanding its work across four strategic pillars: Citizen Participation and Governance, Public Service Accountability, Youth Leadership and Civic Innovation, and Institutional Sustainability. We are looking for a motivated Programmes Intern to join our team and support the delivery of this ambitious agenda.

About the Role:

The Programmes Intern will play a hands-on role supporting TAL’s governance and accountability programmes — from planning and implementation through to monitoring and reporting. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career development professional to gain practical experience in programme management, donor reporting, MEAL systems, and community-based governance work, while contributing directly to TAL’s mission of building a more transparent and accountable Zambia.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the design, planning, implementation, and evaluation of TAL’s governance and accountability programmes.
  • Help develop programme workplans, logical frameworks, and results matrices in line with donor requirements.
  • Support day-to-day programme implementation, helping ensure timely delivery against targets and milestones.
  • Coordinate with government institutions, civil society partners, and community stakeholders to support effective programme delivery.
  • Assist in preparing programme reports (quarterly, semi-annual, and annual) for donors and management.
  • Support the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) system and related data collection processes.
  • Help identify programmatic risks and contribute to mitigation strategies in consultation with the Team Lead.
  • Assist in developing fundraising proposals, concept notes, and expressions of interest.
  • Support the coordination of programme officers and field-based staff or volunteers.
  • Help maintain relationships with implementing partners and support compliance with grant agreements.

Who We’re Looking For:

  • A degree (or final-year student) in Development Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • A genuine interest in governance, transparency, accountability, and civic participation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with communities, local authorities, and partners with cultural sensitivity and professionalism.
  • Basic knowledge of monitoring and evaluation concepts is an added advantage.
  • Willingness to travel to locations within and outside Zambia, with frequent travels to community locations within Choma District and Southern Province.
  • A team player who is proactive, adaptable, and eager to learn.

Applicants must be based in Choma District

What We Offer:

  • Hands-on experience in programme management within a growing, community-rooted governance organization.
  • Mentorship and skills development in civic engagement, MEAL, and donor reporting.
  • Exposure to Zambia’s local governance ecosystem, including Ward Development Committees and local authorities.
  • The opportunity to contribute to real, measurable change in communities
