Purpose of the Role:

The Remanufacturing Machinist is responsible for carrying out precision machining, component refurbishment, dimensional restoration, inspection, and remanufacturing activities on heavy mining equipment components and assemblies. The role supports component rebuild and remanufacturing programs by producing and restoring parts to OEM specifications through the use of conventional and CNC machining equipment, engineering drawings, precision measuring instruments, and approved remanufacturing standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Precision Machining Operations

  • Set up and operate conventional and CNC machine tools.
  • Perform turning, boring, milling, drilling, tapping, reaming, grinding, and threading operations.
  • Machine components to OEM specifications and approved tolerances.
  • Restore worn surfaces and manufacture replacement parts where required.

2. Component Inspection & Defect Assessment

  • Inspect components received for remanufacturing.
  • Assess wear, damage, distortion, cracks, scoring, and dimensional deviations.
  • Measure critical dimensions and determine repair requirements.
  • Verify component condition before and after machining activities.

3. Component Rebuild & Remanufacturing Support

  • Machine components used in hydraulic, drive-train, structural, and mechanical systems.
  • Restore shafts, housings, bores, bushes, bearing seats, pins, and other wear components.
  • Support component rebuild teams during remanufacturing activities.
  • Ensure remanufactured components meet OEM standards.

4. Drawing Interpretation & Machining Standards

  • Interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, and technical specifications.
  • Apply approved machining methods and procedures.
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, and cutting parameters.
  • Ensure compliance with OEM and HCM remanufacturing standards.

5. Quality Control & Dimensional Verification

  • Perform dimensional inspections before, during, and after machining.
  • Use precision measuring equipment to verify compliance.
  • Record measurement results and inspection findings.
  • Support first-pass quality acceptance objectives.

6. Machine Maintenance & Tooling Management

  • Maintain machine tools, fixtures, tooling, and measuring equipment.
  • Report equipment defects and calibration requirements.
  • Support preventive maintenance activities.
  • Monitor tooling condition and replacement requirements.

7. Safety, Environmental & Workshop Compliance

  • Comply with all HCM, OEM, and statutory safety requirements.
  • Conduct JSAs and participate in toolbox meetings.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping standards.
  • Ensure proper management of coolants, lubricants, swarf, and waste materials.

8. Documentation & Continuous Improvement

  • Complete machining reports, measurements, and repair documentation.
  • Maintain component traceability and quality records.
  • Support root cause investigations and reliability improvement initiatives.
  • Recommend process and machining improvements.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have a full Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Craft Certificate in Machining, Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering, or related trade.
  • Technician Certificate (NQF 5) will be added advantage.
  • Valid EIZ Membership
  • 3-5 years' experience in machining and component repair.
  • Experience operating lathes, milling machines, boring machines, and drilling equipment.
  • ZAQA Validated Qualifications.

  • Measurement & Inspection: Competent in precision measuring equipment and quality verification processes.
  • Technical Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and tolerances.
  • Safety Orientation: Strong commitment to workshop safety, quality systems, and environmental compliance.
  • Communication & Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with rebuild technicians, welders, engineers, and inspectors.
