Farm Mechanic

Key Requirements

• Minimum 5 years' proven experience as a Farm Mechanic within the agricultural or farming industry.
• Strong experience servicing, maintaining, and repairing tractors, agricultural machinery, and a wide range of farm implements.
• Sound knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, gearboxes, transmissions, and mechanical components.
• Proven ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults efficiently.
• Experience carrying out preventative and corrective maintenance to minimise equipment downtime.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently.
• Good workshop management, organisational, and record-keeping skills.
• Valid driver's licence with the willingness to work flexible hours during peak farming seasons.
• Welding, fabrication, and machinery diagnostic software experience will be advantageous.
• Strong commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and continuous equipment reliability.

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose, service, maintain, and repair tractors, agricultural machinery, and farm equipment to ensure maximum operational efficiency.
• Perform preventative maintenance according to scheduled service intervals to reduce equipment breakdowns and production downtime.
• Repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical components, transmissions, gearboxes, and other mechanical systems.
• Respond promptly to machinery breakdowns and carry out emergency repairs during critical farming operations.
• Conduct routine inspections of machinery and identify potential faults before they develop into major failures.
• Maintain accurate job cards, maintenance records, service histories, and monthly workshop reports.
• Monitor workshop inventory and spare parts usage while recommending replacement parts when required.
• Maintain a clean, organised, and safe workshop environment in accordance with health and safety standards.
• Assist with equipment installations, modifications, and machinery improvements where required.
• Ensure all maintenance activities comply with company procedures and manufacturer specifications.
• Support farm operations by ensuring all machinery and equipment remain available and fully operational.
• Provide technical advice and recommendations on equipment maintenance, repairs, and operational improvements.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 / Matric is advantageous.
• Trade Test or qualification in Diesel Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a related technical field is preferred.
• Minimum 5 years' experience as a Farm Mechanic in an agricultural environment.
• Valid driver's licence.
• Experience maintaining tractors, farm machinery, and agricultural equipment.
• Computer literacy and experience using machinery diagnostic software are advantageous.
• Welding and fabrication experience is beneficial.
• Strong knowledge of preventative maintenance programmes and workshop best practices.
