Job Description – Electrical Engineer

Position Overview

Our client in the electrical engineering industry is looking for a qualified and experienced Electrical Engineer to join their team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical and electronic systems to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant equipment. Working closely with the Maintenance Manager, the Electrical Engineer will play a key role in minimising downtime, improving equipment reliability, and supporting continuous operational performance through effective preventative and corrective maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Maintenance

  • Perform preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on electrical equipment and systems.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical and electronic components on plant machinery and equipment.
  • Respond promptly to electrical breakdowns to minimise operational downtime.
  • Conduct routine inspections to identify potential equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure all electrical installations comply with statutory regulations and organisational standards.

Equipment Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and repair electrical, electronic, and automation-related faults on plant equipment.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Test electrical circuits, motors, drives, sensors, switches, relays, and control panels.
  • Assist with troubleshooting PLC-controlled equipment and automated systems.
  • Support equipment commissioning, upgrades, and modification projects.

Preventative Maintenance

  • Execute scheduled preventative maintenance activities in accordance with maintenance plans.
  • Accurately record maintenance work within the maintenance management system.
  • Identify recurring equipment faults and recommend long-term corrective solutions.
  • Assist in developing maintenance procedures and standard operating practices.

Plant Support

  • Monitor the performance of electrical systems and utilities.
  • Ensure electrical equipment operates safely, reliably, and efficiently.
  • Provide timely technical support to operations teams to minimise operational interruptions.
  • Participate in shutdown maintenance and continuous improvement initiatives.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Perform all duties in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety regulations.
  • Follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and safe electrical work practices.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, safety, and operational standards.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised working environment.
  • Report unsafe conditions and recommend corrective actions.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete maintenance reports and work orders accurately.
  • Maintain records of inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Report equipment defects and recurring failures to the Maintenance Manager.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate electrical drawings and technical documentation.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)
  • Equipment reliability
  • Downtime attributable to electrical faults
  • Compliance with maintenance schedules

Minimum Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Valid Electrical Craft Certificate or recognised electrical trade qualification will be an added advantage.
  • Membership with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) and/or the Engineering Registration Board (ERB) will be an added advantage.

Experience Required

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in an industrial electrical engineering or maintenance role within a continuous production or industrial environment.
  • Experience maintaining electrical systems on automated production lines.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial electrical equipment, motors, drives, control systems, and automation.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving equipment breakdowns in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Familiarity with PLC-controlled equipment and automated systems.
